Brand Profile: Comme des Garçons
Japanese fashion designer Rei Kawakubo founded Comme des Garçons, CDG for short, in the early 1970s in Tokyo. She had no formal fashion design training, but her previous studies in art and work with textiles and as a freelance stylist gave her the background she needed to build the most prominent Japanese high-fashion brand in the world. The Comme des Garçons aesthetic is known for its deconstructed style in blacks, whites, and grays but has since expanded its signature style through new lines and collaboration collections. CDG has created no less than 20 diffusion and sub lines of clothing and accessories since the brand started including several managed directly by Junya Watanabe- Rei's protege. Most recently, Comme des Garçons has been in the pop culture spotlight with its PLAY diffusion line. PLAY has been designed with a younger audience in mind and is made up of everyday streetwear staples like t-shirts and converse. The iconic PLAY heart logo has been seen on celebrities like Kanye West and Drake. In NYC you can stop by the CDG BLACK store as well as the Comme des Garçons flagship store.
