Bills SOPA and PIPA Could Censor the Internet in the US
What's up with Google today? And why are people tweeting about soap and Pippa Middleton?
Google is spreading awareness that the Senate will begin voting soon on two bills put before congress that could potentially censor your internet use in the USA.
SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) and PIPA (Protect IP Act) are the two bills - if they're passed, the government could order websites of their choosing to be blocked. The apparent purpose of these laws is to stop piracy and illegal downloads of content protected by the law, but they also give the government a lot of control as to what we can and cannot see online. We all know about the strict internet usage laws in China that block popular sites like Facebook, and it seems that with these bills in place, the US would be heading down a similar route. Plus we all know that bills alone cannot stop piracy - that is a problem too complicated to fix this way. To learn more about these bills and to sign a petition against them, click here
