Crossing Houston @ 154 Smart Clothes Gallery: The Roots of Street Art

This week, 154 Smart Clothes opened to the public for the first time.  The gallery has hosted a number of shows in the past few months, but as of this week it will be open daily as a gallery, not just for special shows.

154 Smart Clothes' inaugural show is titled, Crossing Houston and draws on the experience of gallery director Paul Bridgewater and other gallerists from the 80s East Village DIY arts movement. The opening party was packed full of colorful New York characters both young and old, and all sufficiently "artsy". Works from the early age of street art were on display, including a whole set of Keith Haring prints & paintings, one of which was made especially for Paul, the director of the gallery. Another big hit at the show were the hanging Cupie Dolls by David Wojnarowica, which were strung creepily from the ceiling. We wish Smart Clothes all the best, and can't wait to see what's coming up next for the new LES art space.
