Photographer Focus: Jack Toohey

Jack Toohey's photos remind me of that Beatles song "With a Little Help from my Friends." There's no doubt he's got a great bunch of partners in crime that he has a ball with, and obviously captures all of the pivotal moments beautifully. The vintage feel in a lot of his photos also creates a feeling of instant nostalgia. There's definitely an aspect of playfulness in each one, and also a great deal of successful experimentation.  Check out more photos by Jack here, and on his Flickr, and learn a little more about the artist in the short Q&A below.

what makes a great photo

This is always a really difficult thing to answer, mainly because I don't think there is an answer as there are many different reasons a photo could be great. For me I love photos that capture moments and spark some sort of emotion in the viewer. Being in the right place at the right time is important I think.

what makes a terrible photo

Lack of vision or insight. I think also poor technical knowledge can lead to generally terrible photos, even of amazing moments/people/places.

why do you love photography

One of the main things I love about photography is the ability to capture moments, definitive or mundane. I love the thought of one day being old and wrinkly, yet still able to view my youth, the world and the people in it as it is today.

do you do any other art?

Sure do! I consider myself to be a filmmaker also, and do a fair bit of graphic design work on the side.
