Yoshitomo Nara - Nobody's Fool

Japanese pop artist Yoshitomo Nara's incredibly cute characters come off a bit darker after wandering through his current exhibition at the Asia Society entitled: "Nobody's Fool".  Driven by three not so subtle themes- Isolation, Rebellion and Music- the exhibit is much more than just paintings on walls, it is  a sight to be taken in and enjoyed.

Located on the second and third floors of the Asia Society, Nobody's Fool wraps sculpture, painting and sketches in innovative display methods that leave the viewer visually satisfied but wanting for more information about the artist.

The majority of Nara's work on display at the Asia Society features sketches, drawings and paintings of his iconic cute characters peppered with some large sculptures of his iconic cute characters- well, that is why you want to go to the exhibit isn't it?  Departing from the expected was a wall of artwork from vinyl records curated by Mr. Nara as well as some pottery adorned with his drawings.

But the exhibit's pleasant surprise lies in its display techniques.  One of the exhibit's galleries features small holes which can be peered through to reveal massive murals of Nara's work.  A large open room features what looks like a large doll house with lights inside.  Upon close investigation, the doll house is filled with Yoshitomo's sketches and drawings. Yet another section includes doors of all shapes and colors which open to paintings and sculptures of different sizes.

Overall the exhibit is visually amazing and the captions provide some insight into the artworks, but there is a surprising lack of detail regarding the artist himself, perhaps so that you will purchase the exhibit catalogue on sale at the gift shop.

solifestyle would definitely recommend attending if you have a chance.

A note of caution- it is incredibly tempting to take photos while inside, but the staff will quickly stop you if you are not discreet.

A note of disappointment- there were no lithographs or signed Nara works to be purchased at the museum shop- only small gifts and the exhibit catalogue were available.
